The HOTEL IMPERIAL is located right in the center of the action. We are close to restaurants, museums, night life, theaters, movie theaters and much more. Here is a link to show you a few of the major spots that away you just outside our doors, REMBRANDTPLEIN/THOREBECKEPLEIN / VIJZELSTRAAT and just a short walk away is WATERLOOPLEIN . However, since we are located in the center of the Centrum downtown section, you can walk easily to many other attractions.

MUSEUMS

Holland Museum directory by Netherlands Board of Tourism- searchable by regions, type or collections. It also has virtual rooms.

RIJKSMUSEUM - major museum of Western European painting and decorative arts. Includes an extensive collection of Dutch masters.

Van Gogh Museum - With more than 200 paintings and almost 500 drawings, the Van Gogh Museum maintains the largest and most varied Van Gogh collection in the world.

REMBRANDTHUIS - located in the house where Rembrandt lived and worked from 1639 till 1658. The museum shows an almost complete collection of Rembrandt's etchings and prints.

Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art - is the most important museum of modern and contemporary art in The Netherlands.

Anne Frank - official site of the modern-day museum to Anne Frank, who spent two years in hiding while she wrote her diary in the house.

Electric Ladyland - First Museum of Flurescent Art - including participatory art as well as permanent displays.

Amsterdam Historical Museum - The collection consists of paintings, prints, marquettes, objects and archeological finds and shows how Amsterdam grew from a small medieval town to a world famous centre.

Computer Museum - The collection includes technical and scientific computing equipment from the sixties to the present day including commercial equipment, experimental machines and machines built for specific scientific purposes.

Filmmuseum - As a national center for cinematography the museum aims to promote a lively Dutch film culture, by the collection, restoration and screening of film treasures. Also presents new films, both Dutch and foreign art films.

Jewish Historical Museum - The central motif of the permanent collection is the religion, culture, and history of the Jews in the Netherlands.
Royal Tropical Museum - The institute supports non-Western countries in sustainable development and informs the public about the tropics and sub-tropics.

The Allard Pierson Museum - The archaeological museum of the University of Amsterdam. The nucleus of its collection are the collections of C.W. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Van Leer, Six, and Van Lier.

The Netherlands Maritime Museum - Housed in the National Naval Depot, a former arsenal of the Dutch Navy that is over 300 years old. The collection tells the story of the maritime past of the Netherlands.

Tramway Museum - Volunteer museum that offers rides in vintage cars. The trams run along a former railway track along the Amsterdam Forest.

Zoological Museum - The museum curates more than 13 million specimens with special focus on South East Asian and South American fauna, and marine fauna.

De Appel, center for contemporary art - Provides space to well-known and lesser known artists for projects, installations and research.

PERFORMING ARTS

Amsterdam has some 225 venues in total, including over seventy theatres and concert halls. Approximately 19,000 stage, music, opera, dance, cabaret etc. performances are given each year. The main theatres are the Muziektheater (music theatre) with the Het Nationale Ballet (National Ballet) and Nederlands Opera (Dutch Opera) as regular performers, the Stadsschouwburg and the Koninklijk Thater Carré. The Concertgebouw is the home of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Akhnaton , Centre for world culture Akhnaton is a free venue for the cultural heritage of migrant youths.

Bellevue/Nieuwe de la Mar Theatre and ballet

Koninklijk Theater Carré Theatre for, among other things, stage plays, musicals, cabaret and circus.

Concertgebouw Home of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (principal conductor: Ricardo Chailly)

Melkweg Venue for pop music and world music, also gallery, cinema and theatre.

Het Muziektheater, opera and ballet venue. Home of the Nederlandse Opera and the National Ballet .

Nes theatres The Nes is a street with four theatres: the Cosmic, the Engelenbak, the Frascati and the Vlaams Cultureel Centrum Brakke Grond (Flemish cultural centre).

Paradiso Venue for pop music and world music.

DAM SQUARE AREA

TIME Nieuwenzijds Voorburgwal 163-165.  Home of the Fusion@Time club for D&B. Usually open till very late.

IQ Nieuwenzijds Voorburgwal 162. A big lounge, by the same owner of the Supper Club and More. Will have Amsterdams first Oxygen bar. Opens in March 2001.

Café Vaaghuyzen Nieuwe Nieuwstraat 17.  A modern dance café, located in the center of Amsterdam, near the railway station. Music every day of the week, presented by DJs of all flavors. Acapulco Nights, mondays from 20.00 till 01.00. Casino, Champagne, Cocktails.

Leidsesquare (Leidseplein)

Paradiso Weteringschans 6-8.  One of the major dance and event places in Amsterdam.  On Friday (Paradisco) and Saturday (VIP club) night always crowded. Sometimes famous DJ's. Also, live bands. Long lines so come early. You have to buy your tickets in advance.

Club Suf Klein gartmanplantsoen 7-9 (the Kring). Authentic underground night every last Saturday of the month.

REMBRANDT SQUARE

Awakenings  Regular parties in the Westergasfabriek, Amsterdam, Holland

Escape Rembrandtplein 11.  Only, absolutely only on Chemistry nights and even then a bit too...well. Crowded, young but good music.  A fact in the Dutch nightlife since 1987. Exclusive parties, music, light and decoration: all faces of a progressive club venue. For young adults who see themselves in a multi media environment, existing of modern dancemusic, hi-tech lighting, eye caressing visuals and internet.

Disco iT Famous for its gay orientation and Madhouse nights with DJ Jean. But still check out the other venues for an interesting time.

Mazzo Mazzo, the oldest club of Amsterdam.  A variety of venues to keep you going. The dance club's regularly updated (flash)site around a changing theme, complete program on the site.

Sinners Wagenstraat 3, a little street just of the square, next to Escape.  Their venue is mostly R&B and they love to party. Especially on friday, upper dance floor.
